Chef Fei opens its first overseas restaurant in San Diego, United States
Chef Fei, a Chinese chain of Hunan cuisine restaurants, has opened its first overseas establishment in San Diego, California, United States. The restaurant began operating on September 5. As ECNS reports, the opening marked a new stage in the international expansion of Hunan cuisine, known for its spicy dishes.
Queues and reservations
Brand manager Lu Wenwei said that some visitors traveled two to three hours to try the restaurant's signature dishes. He named stir-fried pork with green peppers and stir-fried beef with chili peppers among them.
According to Lu Wenwei, waiting times during peak hours exceeded 100 minutes, while all reservation slots for September had already been taken.
The spread of Hunan cuisine
According to data cited by ECNS, nearly 2,000 Hunan cuisine restaurants operate in more than 60 countries and regions around the world. Previously, such establishments abroad were mainly small family businesses aimed at Chinese communities in ethnic neighborhoods. Now, major brands are increasingly opening restaurants in prestigious commercial districts and attracting local customers.

Hu Yuanqiu, a native of Hunan who runs two Hunan restaurants and two barbecue establishments in Bangkok, said that around 80 Hunan restaurants operate in the Thai capital. In her view, the spread of this cuisine is supported by demand from Chinese people abroad, tourists and entrepreneurs, as well as the development of supply chains and cross-border logistics.
Adaptation in new markets
According to Hu, restaurants outside China seek to preserve authentic flavors, including the distinctive aroma produced during rapid high-temperature stir-frying, while also offering different levels of spiciness. The Middle East has also become a new destination for Hunan cuisine.
Li Dan, general manager of THE HUNAN HOUSE, noted that the key tasks are combining authenticity with adaptation to local tastes and complying with overseas food safety standards. Some brands plan to establish research and development centers abroad and involve local specialists in quality control.
