The EU will help Hungary and Slovakia phase out oil imports from Russia
The European Union is working with Hungary and Slovakia to diversify oil supplies so that both countries can gradually phase out Russian crude. This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen.
According to her, the EU remains committed to completely phasing out Russian energy resources from the European market. At the same time, Brussels is helping Budapest and Bratislava find alternative sources of oil supply.
The statement came amid risks to oil transportation via the Druzhba pipeline due to threats to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
“We are working closely with both Hungary and Slovakia to help them diversify their supplies and phase out Russian oil,” Itkonen noted.
Currently, Russian oil is subject to EU sanctions, but exemptions remain in place for Hungary and Slovakia.
