The EU Will Not Intervene in the U.S.-Canada Trade Dispute — Euronews
European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič stated that the European Union cannot act as a mediator in the trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
Šefčovič said that the EU supports “free and fair trade with lower tariffs or none at all.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the European Union is not in a position to act as a mediator in the trade dispute between Canada and the United States.
“I don’t think we have the capacity to act as mediators. At the same time, I know that they [Canada and the U.S.] have such close economic ties that, despite the current tensions, attempts will be made sooner or later to resolve them,” the European Commissioner said.
He also noted that the European Commission is ready to consider “all possibilities” for expanding cooperation with Canada, but added that any new agreements “will largely depend on how comfortable the Canadian side feels and what its level of ambition will be.”
He made these remarks in an interview with Euronews.
Canada will impose duties on goods from the U.S. in response to Trump’s tariffs.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that, starting January 1, 2027, the United States will impose 50-percent tariffs on cars, auto parts, and steel from Canada. This was reported by Deutsche Welle. The announcement came amid an escalating trade dispute between the two countries following the breakdown of negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the imposition of reciprocal tariffs against the United States. The Canadian measures, which target the U.S. steel and dairy industries in particular, are set to take effect on September 8.
