The EU has allocated 2.5 billion euros for Gripen fighter jets for Ukraine
The European Union has funded the purchase of Swedish Gripen E fighter jets for Ukraine in the amount of 2.5 billion euros. The funds were allocated as part of defense payments under a large-scale EU loan to Ukraine totaling 90 billion euros.
Of the more than 3.47 billion euros that the European Union transferred to Ukraine on July 30, the majority is planned to be used to purchase 16 modern Swedish-made Gripen E fighter jets for the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Ukraine will purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets for 2.5 billion euros from the EU loan totaling 90 billion euros.
An official statement from the European Commission noted that part of the 3.47 billion euro tranche transferred by the EU to Ukraine on July 30 will be used to purchase Gripen fighter jets.
In response to a follow-up question from a “European Truth” correspondent, European Commission spokesperson Balázs Ujvári confirmed this but declined to specify the number of aircraft or the total cost of the purchase.
Later, a “EuroPravda” correspondent learned from her own sources that 2.5 billion euros from the 3.47 billion euro tranche will be allocated for the purchase of Gripen fighter jets.
As previously reported by “European Truth,” Ukraine plans to purchase 16 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden in the near future.
Given that manufacturing new aircraft for Ukraine will take time, in 2026 Sweden will transfer older-model aircraft—which are already in service with its armed forces—to Ukraine free of charge.
Ukraine expects to receive the first of the new Gripen fighter jets as early as 2027.
