The EU has responded to the Vatican's criticism regarding double standards

The European Union has responded to the Vatican’s allegations of double standards regarding the war. Officials in Brussels emphasized that they continue to adhere to international law.

The EU stressed that its position remains unchanged, despite the criticism voiced by the Vatican last week.

Speaking last Friday at a closed-door conference at Pope Leo XIV University on the topic of war, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Vatican’s doctrinal department, stated that governments are increasingly invoking international law for political gain rather than universal principles.

He accused the EU of inconsistency in its foreign policy. He argued that the European Union imposes sanctions on some countries while providing military and financial support to others, even when, in his words, “more serious invasions with even more brutal consequences” are taking place in other regions.

This contradiction, according to Fernández, reflects political and economic interests rather than a steadfast commitment to international law.

Brussels, for its part, refrained from directly responding to this criticism. “We don’t usually comment on comments,” European Commission Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinho told the publication on Monday.

European External Action Service spokesperson Anouar El Anouni noted that the EU “calls for compliance with international law—always and under all circumstances.” He emphasized that the EU condemns “human rights violations, the killing of journalists, and attacks on the civilian population, particularly on civilian infrastructure,” wherever they occur.

This was reported by Politico.

The Vatican plans to open a café on the terrace of St. Peter’s Basilica.

On November 27, Pope Leo XIV set out on his first apostolic journey, during which he will visit Turkey and Lebanon

As a reminder, a delegation from the National Association of Ukrainian Lobbyists metwith Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. The Ukrainian delegation included Ivan Fursenko, who lobbies on behalf of local communities.
