Evkaf opposes beer festival at Zouhouri Square in Larnaca — Cyprus Mail

The Turkish Cypriot religious foundation Evkaf expressed dissatisfaction with the holding of a beer festival at Zouhouri Square in Larnaca, Cyprus, where the historic Zouhouri Mosque complex is located.

Call to relocate the event

In a statement circulated by Turkish Cypriot online media, Evkaf stressed the need to respect the historical and religious identity of the site. The foundation also said that local residents had asked for the festival to be held elsewhere.

Evkaf called on the Larnaca municipality and the responsible authorities to show greater sensitivity to the character of the monument when organizing future events. Cyprus Mail reports.

Protection of the historic complex

The Zouhouri complex was previously included on the list of cultural heritage sites selected for preservation as part of the work of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. The relevant projects were supported by the United Nations Development Programme.

Conservation work at the Zouhouri tekke was completed in February 2022. On March 23, 2023, an event was held to mark the completion of the work, which also covered the Tuzla hammam. Separately, the Larnaca municipality implemented a project to improve Zouhouri Square, which was officially opened in January 2023.
