The European Commission Is Preparing a Record Fine for Google — Politico
The Commission is expected to impose a fine on the American tech giant as early as Thursday or Friday for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Google is accused of illegally favoring its own services over those of competitors through its search engine. A second penalty regarding Google Play is also in the works.
The EU’s investigation into the search giant began in March 2024, and a decision was ready as early as March of this year. However, Brussels postponed it to give the company one last chance to rectify the situation.
The Digital Markets Advisory Committee, a group of national experts whom the Commission is required to consult before making decisions regarding the DMA, is set to meet on Thursday, July 23. This has raised expectations that the decision will be published shortly thereafter.
