German Interior Minister Warns of Daily Threat of Hybrid War — Deutsche Welle
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the country faces threats of hybrid warfare on a daily basis. According to him, these threats include espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations by foreign states.
Dobrindt made these remarks in an interview with Bild am Sonntag following the discovery of a drone carrying explosives at the Leipzig/Halle Airport.
“We are not at war, but we are a target of hybrid warfare every day,” the minister said.
He noted that attacks aimed at destabilizing Germany or causing it direct harm have become a constant reality. At the same time, the country plans to step up research into technologies to counter drones.
According to Dobrindt, a new drone security research center is set to begin operations in late August at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) test airfield in Saxony-Anhalt.
Earlier, the German military also reported detecting two drones over a Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia. The incident occurred on the evening of August 6. According to German media reports, personnel operating U.S. Patriot air defense systems are stationed at the base.
This happened two days after a drone carrying explosives was detected near a Ukrainian transport plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Dobrindt called this incident a “hybrid attack scenario.”
German authorities have not yet officially accused any foreign country of involvement in the incidents. At the same time, some German politicians are speculating about a possible Russian connection. The Russian Embassy in Berlin has rejected these accusations and called the incident in Leipzig a “fabricated provocation.”
