Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi says there is no military solution — The Hindu

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in Tehran that there is no military solution to his country’s conflict with the United States. He also said that in the event of a new military confrontation, Iran would respond more strongly and defend itself with greater force.

As The Hindu reports, Araghchi made the statement on October 4 at a meeting with foreign ambassadors. According to him, only negotiations based on justice and fairness, rather than new sanctions, can end the conflict.

Negotiations have reached a dead end

The publication notes that large-scale bombings did not lead to a decisive end to the war that the United States and Israel launched at the end of February. In recent weeks, Washington has reduced military operations, focusing on economic pressure. The United States has not carried out strikes on Iran since September 1.

In June, the sides agreed on a memorandum of understanding intended to create a framework for a lasting settlement. However, the agreement collapsed, largely because of disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.

Dispute over the Strait of Hormuz

Since the start of the war, Iran has sought to establish control over the important shipping route and has attacked vessels that tried to pass through the strait without its permission. Last week, Iranian and U.S. officials held indirect talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Tehran said it had presented seven conditions for resuming the strait’s operation.

President Trump rejected the proposal while not ruling out either further negotiations or the resumption of military operations. Axios also reported that on October 2, senior Trump administration officials discussed the war in Iran and the conflict in Yemen.
