Google is investing €13 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland
Google has announced a €13 billion investment in the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland. As part of the project, the company plans to build three new data centers, expand its existing facility in Hamina, and fund energy projects to meet growing capacity needs.
“This is Google’s largest single investment in Europe and a testament to Finland’s leadership in the responsible development of artificial intelligence infrastructure,” the company stated.
A key part of the agreement is a 22-year contract with the Finnish energy company Fortum. Google will purchase up to 50% of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power plant.
Currently, the Loviisa nuclear power plant provides about 10% of Finland’s total electricity. Fortum stated that Google’s long-term commitment will provide the company with stable financial prospects and help implement a program to extend the plant’s operational life and increase its capacity.
Google’s new data centers will be located in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. In addition, the company will expand its facility in Hamina, which has been operating since 2009 on the site of a former paper mill. Construction of the main facilities is scheduled for 2027–2028.
According to Google’s estimates, the project will support more than 37,000 jobs, and the annual contribution of these investments to Finland’s GDP could amount to approximately 3.6 billion euros.
“Google’s decision is a clear confirmation of our strengths,” said Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
According to him, the economic impact of data center development extends beyond direct investment to include innovation, research, and development.
It is worth noting that in recent years, Finland has become an attractive destination for data center construction thanks to its cool climate, significant amounts of low-carbon electricity, and relatively uncongested power grids.
Low temperatures also help reduce the amount of electricity needed to cool server equipment. Google’s infrastructure in Finland will support, among other things, the Gemini AI assistant, as well as Search, Maps, and YouTube.
The company stated that the investment package also includes funding for clean energy projects and special funds to support biodiversity, education, research, and workforce training.
“Google is proud to be expanding its presence in Finland. This investment underscores our commitment to responsibly expanding our technical infrastructure while simultaneously developing new energy capacity and networks,” said Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google.
