California Governor Newsom calls himself an opponent of the status quo — The Hill

In the United States, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that he does not consider himself part of the Democratic Party establishment and described himself as a politician who opposes the status quo. As The Hill reports, he made these statements in an interview with Vanity Fair amid public speculation about a possible run in the 2028 presidential election.

Newsom said he is more inclined to take risks than many other elected officials. He also commented on growing support among Democratic voters for candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) organization in the current midterm election cycle.

Criticism of the DSA

The governor criticized the DSA for focusing on slogans. According to him, many of the ideas promoted by the organization have already been implemented in California. As an example, he cited legislation he signed that limits annual rent increases and introduces new restrictions on tenant evictions.

Newsom also described himself as a supporter of active climate policy, while emphasizing that he is not opposed to business.

Plans for 2028 and technology

During the conversation, Newsom was asked about his previous statement to CNN: he had said that he would not run for president in 2028 if former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race, as they would be competing for a similar support base. The governor replied that a decision cannot be postponed indefinitely, but added that he is not overly concerned about the issue.

Separately, Newsom spoke about the development of advanced artificial intelligence technologies, one of California's key industries. If elected president, he said he would lead an international movement focused on truth, safety and trust. He also said that access to power had changed some leaders in the technology industry, without specifying whom he meant.

Newsom also discussed a draft Democratic framework document called “Project 2029,” which, he said, contains about eight pages of policy proposals. These include zoning reform, corporate taxation, limits on hidden fees, preschool education, caps on childcare costs, family leave, paid sick leave, family tax credits, industrial decarbonization, antitrust measures, immigration and whistleblower protections.
