India has urged its citizens not to enlist in the Russian military
The Indian government has urged its citizens not to travel to Russia with the intention of joining the Russian army. The country’s authorities “strongly discouraged” such trips, warning of the “deadly danger” that could await Indians while serving in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces.
This warning came after the Indian Embassy in Moscow began noticing an increase in the number of Indian emigrants being recruited for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it continues to receive reports of Indians joining the Russian army despite numerous appeals and warnings.
Over the past two years, the government has repeatedly emphasized the risks and dangers associated with such actions, and has periodically advised Indian citizens to exercise caution when seeking employment opportunities abroad and not to fall for job offers from unverified sources.
“The government reiterates that this is a dangerous path and strongly discourages it. It is recommended that people consider the seriousness of such actions and understand the mortal danger to which they are exposing themselves,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated.
The ministry added that it continues to cooperate with Russian authorities to ensure the safety and prompt release of all Indians serving in the Russian armed forces.
According to officials, this alarming trend continues, as many people in India are lured by what they consider to be “attractive” job offers, only to be misled by recruitment agents.
During his visit to Moscow in July 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Indian recruits who had signed contracts to join the Russian army, but wanted to return to India, and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin assured him of assistance.
However, according to officials, although dozens of recruits were helped to return after special permission was granted by Moscow, even more people are joining the ranks of recruits, hoping to earn money and, possibly, emigrate.
