Iran to double gasoline price beyond monthly quota — Asharq Al-Awsat
In Iran, starting on the morning of September 8, the price of gasoline will double for consumers who have used up the fuel volume under the first and second tariff tiers. The price per liter under the third tariff will rise from 5,000 to 10,000 tomans, or approximately 4.5 U.S. cents, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
Three tariff tiers
Iran has a quota system: the first 60 liters of gasoline per month cost 1,500 tomans per liter. Consumers pay 3,000 tomans per liter for the next 50 liters, while after that volume, the tariff before the changes was 5,000 tomans.
Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the new third-tier price will take effect on September 8. She clarified that tariffs for the first and second tiers will remain unchanged. According to her, various amounts were considered during expert discussions, but the price was ultimately set at 10,000 tomans.

Rial exchange rate and U.S. pressure
Iran is a major oil producer and has heavily subsidized gasoline for years, making fuel price changes politically sensitive. According to websites tracking exchange rates, on September 7, more than 2.2 million Iranian rials were offered for one U.S. dollar on the black market.
Before the start of the war in the Middle East, which began on February 28, the exchange rate stood at approximately 1.7 million rials per dollar. At the end of April, it reached the then-record level of 1.8 million rials per dollar.
At the end of August, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent laid out plans to increase financial pressure on Iran. The article also notes that the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, seeking to reduce the country's oil exports to zero.
