Israeli team to compete with kosher shawarma in Texas — Jerusalem Post

An Israeli team of 14 participants will make its debut in October at the Texas Open Fire Meat Up competition in Hondo, Texas, where it will prepare an approximately 200-kilogram kosher wagyu beef shawarma. The dish will be cooked exclusively over an open fire, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Shawarma on a special spit

The competition will take place at Quail Crossing Ranch. According to the organizers, more than 30 teams will take part, and hundreds of barbecue masters and influencers are also expected. Participants will be judged on presentation, cooking technique, and taste; gas and electric equipment will not be used.

A special iron structure with a large spit weighing about 440 pounds, or approximately 200 kilograms, is being made for the team. The equipment is being built by an Israeli from the city of Or Yehuda, who now lives in Miami; it will later be delivered to Texas. The beef will be supplied by a kosher supplier from Texas.

Israeli flavors on the menu

The team captain will be Israeli meat blogger Reuben E. Maislos. According to him, the choice of kosher wagyu is intended to distinguish the Israeli entry from other participants and accommodate the needs of team members who observe kashrut.

The lineup will also include chefs Charlie Fadida and Yehuda Amar, a former contestant on Israeli Master Chef who lives in Miami. The team plans to use tahini, amba, zhug, and spices brought from Israel as seasonings and additions to the shawarma. Maislos also said he intends to serve the dish with a shot of mint-flavored arak and, if possible, accompany the presentation with music by Israeli singer Omer Adam.

The team intends to decorate its stand with Israeli symbols and conduct a campaign among Jewish communities in the United States to invite visitors to taste kosher shawarma.
