Former UN ambassador Gilad Erdan withdraws Unity party from Israel’s elections
Gilad Erdan, the leader of Israel’s Unity party and a former ambassador to the UN, announced that the political force will end its participation in the 2026 elections. As The Jerusalem Post reports, he explained the decision by the party’s low chances of passing the electoral threshold and unsuccessful attempts to unite with other political forces.
Reasons for the decision
Erdan said that support for the party he created currently does not provide a high likelihood of passing the electoral threshold. According to him, opportunities to unite with other parties in the unity bloc also did not materialize.
The politician noted that after about a month of campaigning, most voters primarily want to determine who will become Israel’s prime minister. In his view, the idea of forming a broad national unity government is not among citizens’ main priorities in these elections.

Unification negotiations
The announcement was preceded by an N12 News report that negotiations on a possible merger between Unity and the Blue and White party had not yielded results. The Unity party is led by Erdan and Knesset member Yuli Edelstein, who were previously members of the Likud party.
Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot welcomed Erdan’s decision, calling it a responsible step. He also urged other parties close to the electoral threshold to act responsibly and put Israel’s interests above other considerations.
