Lavrov Warns NATO of Catastrophic Consequences Over the Arctic — Reuters
On August 31, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow views NATO’s increased presence in the Arctic as a direct threat to its security. The Russian official warned the Alliance of “catastrophic” consequences due to its actions in the region.
Russia maintains naval forces in the Arctic, including nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear weapons. Moscow considers this region a sphere of its interests and is developing a maritime route there intended to connect it with Asian countries.
In February, NATO launched the Arctic Sentry mission to strengthen its presence in the far north amid tensions in relations with Russia.
In his article, Lavrov called NATO’s military exercises in the Arctic “aggressive.”
“Such military activity in the Far North poses a direct threat to Russia’s security. The risks of incidents that could lead to an armed confrontation with potentially catastrophic consequences are growing,” Lavrov said.
Russia has the largest military presence and the most developed military infrastructure in the Arctic.
At the same time, in recent years, China has also been stepping up its activity in this mineral-rich region, primarily in cooperation with Moscow.
This month, Norway, which shares a border with Russia, expanded its recently formed military brigade, whose headquarters is located in the Arctic. This marks another step by the NATO country to strengthen its defense presence in the region following the outbreak of the war that Russia launched in 2022.
