A plane carrying the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security made an emergency landing
A U.S. Coast Guard aircraft carrying Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin was forced to make an emergency landing in Washington. The cause was the failure and subsequent fire of one of the engines during the flight.
The incident occurred during a flight of a Gulfstream C-37A jet. Due to problems with the right engine, the crew changed course and headed to Ronald Reagan National Airport.
There were 14 people on board, including Mullin and other high-ranking officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. No one was injured as a result of the incident.
During the flight, the pilot informed air traffic controllers that the plane had lost its right engine, after which the crew declared an emergency.
After landing, Mullin thanked the crew and stated that the landing on a single engine had gone smoothly. According to him, the pilots admitted that this was the first time they had encountered such a situation.
The U.S. Coast Guard has been using this modified business jet to transport officials since 2002.
Previously, the Department of Homeland Security had repeatedly drawn attention to the government aircraft’s wear and tear and its outdated avionics and communications systems.
In 2025, two new Gulfstream 700 aircraft were purchased to meet the agency’s leadership needs. It is currently unknown why Mullin flew on the older C-37A this time.
