Lithuania to deploy military personnel to guard border with Kaliningrad Oblast — RMF24

In Lithuania, military personnel will be involved in assisting the border service in guarding the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast — an aggressor state. The decision is preventive in nature, as the situation on this section of the border is currently calm, RMF24 reports.

Appeal to the Ministry of Defense

Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelinas said that he had appealed to Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas with a request to send the Lithuanian Armed Forces to assist border guards. The military is to support the protection of the border with Kaliningrad Oblast.

Incident on Latvia’s border

The decision was made after an incident on the Latvian-Belarusian border. According to the Latvian Armed Forces, at the beginning of the week, a group of at least 20 migrants accompanied by masked guides attempted to cross the state border.

The Latvian military said that armed smugglers threatened service members and encouraged migrants to enter Latvian territory. Several hours later, masked individuals entered the country, damaged an electrical distribution panel and stole surveillance cameras, after which they retreated to Belarus before border guards arrived.

Katelinas called the incident another escalation and expressed concern that similar provocations could occur on the Lithuanian border as well.
