Merz made a statement regarding the complex relationship between Germany and Poland
On June 25, Merz cited the example of relations between Germany and Poland, stating that even after a complicated history, countries can build partnerships and friendships within Europe.
He made these remarks during the opening of the Conference on Ukraine’s Recovery in Gdańsk.
Merz noted that it was a special moment for him to be in Gdańsk as a representative of Germany. He explained that 35 years ago, Poland and Germany signed a good-neighborhood agreement—despite the fact that during World War II, the two countries were on opposite sides of the conflict.
“For 35 years, Poles and Germans have proven that even after the horrific crimes the Germans committed against Poland and the Polish people, peace, good neighborly relations, and friendship are possible,” Merz said to applause from the audience. “I am very grateful to the Polish people for this,” he added, without directly mentioning the recent dispute between Ukraine and Poland.
Today, Merz added, Europeans stand together to defend freedom on the continent, and that is precisely why they support Ukraine, according to a correspondent for “European Truth.”
