Matthew Lillard says he feels ashamed over involvement in Scream 7 — Jerusalem Post

American actor Matthew Lillard said during a question-and-answer session in Austin, United States, that he feels ashamed over his involvement in the film “Scream 7.” He linked this to actress Melissa Barrera’s dismissal from the franchise after her social media posts supporting Palestine, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Lillard’s statement

According to Lillard, Barrera is “on the right side of history,” and the world should support her. The actor also said that by taking part in the new film, he himself ended up “on the wrong side of history.”

At the same time, Lillard noted that he still enjoys being involved in the film, but it may not have been the best decision.

Melissa Barrera’s dismissal

Melissa Barrera was removed from the “Scream” franchise in 2023 after several Instagram posts in which she condemned Israel’s actions toward Palestinians in Gaza. In one post, the actress called Gaza a “concentration camp” and described the situation as genocide and ethnic cleansing.

After Barrera’s removal, a representative of production company Spyglass told Variety that the company does not tolerate antisemitism or incitement to hate. In particular, the representative mentioned false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust, and statements that cross the line into hate speech.

Other controversies mentioned

Lillard also mentioned the situation involving musician Ed Sheeran. According to the publication, Sheeran faced significant criticism after rapper Macklemore, known as Macklemore, was removed from his role as the artist scheduled to perform before him because of pro-Palestinian remarks during a concert.
