Ghana’s minister proposes creating a training center for electric vehicle mechanics
In China, Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, called for the creation of a specialized training center for mechanics to service and repair electric vehicles. According to him, this should help Ghana prepare specialists for the growing number of electric vehicles on the local market.
The minister voiced the proposal to journalists after visiting a showroom and learning about the operations of Longking, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, during official events in China. He stated that Ghana needs to develop its technical capacity to support the electric mobility industry, as countries are increasingly shifting from fossil-fuel vehicles to cleaner alternatives.
Training specialists
The proposed center, Buah said, would train mechanics to diagnose, service and repair next-generation electric vehicles. He also believes that targeted national efforts are needed to create appropriate conditions for the electric vehicle market and train personnel for the development of this sector.

As MyJoyOnline reports, the minister described China’s experience in electric vehicle manufacturing and technology as an opportunity for Ghana to develop local technical expertise. In his view, the country should not only import electric vehicles but also train mechanics, engineers and other technical workers to service them.
Electric trucks in China
China’s heavy electric vehicle segment is growing rapidly, particularly for mining, ports, factories and short-haul freight transport. According to industry data cited in the report, electric heavy trucks accounted for about 44% of new heavy truck sales in the country in June 2026, although their share of the total fleet was approximately 4%.
Sales of new-energy heavy trucks in the first quarter of 2026 increased by about 45% year on year, to around 44,000 units. The development of this segment is supported, among other things, by technology that replaces discharged batteries with charged ones at specialized stations, reducing vehicle downtime. Buah noted that such experience could be useful for Ghana’s mining, freight and logistics sectors.
