Peace in Ukraine must be achieved through negotiations — China at the UN Security Council
During a meeting of the UN Security Council, Beijing officially expressed its position on the need for a political settlement of the war in Ukraine.
The Chinese diplomat emphasized that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states is a fundamental principle that the international community must uphold.
The PRC representative stressed that a protracted war is not in the interests of any country in the world, including China.
He noted that Beijing supports regular discussions of the situation and advocates for the earliest possible start of dialogue between the parties to the conflict.
“A protracted crisis in Ukraine is not in the interests of any country, including China. China welcomes regular discussions on the situation in Ukraine, and we also welcome negotiations. Peace begins at the negotiating table,” the Chinese diplomat stated during his speech.
The Chinese side outlined four key approaches to ending hostilities.
The first priority is to involve all stakeholders in the peace process to find common ground and resolve existing differences through direct negotiations.
“The crisis has become so complex due to the numerous reasons for the involvement of many parties. China supports the participation of all relevant parties in the peace process to find common ground and set aside differences through dialogue and negotiations to reach a consensus aimed at the final resolution of this conflict and the establishment of a lasting peace,” the PRC representative explained.
The second and third elements of Beijing’s strategy are taking into account the security interests of all states and shaping a new security architecture in Europe.
China believes that the conflict is a result of prolonged tensions and a lack of trust in the region.
“The crisis in Ukraine is an outburst that followed growing tensions in the region, which led to a lack of trust. In this regard, all parties must adhere to the principle of indivisible security and work to ensure an appropriate, sustainable framework for security in the European region,” the diplomat concluded.
China identifies an immediate ceasefire as the fourth step, as it considers a military solution to the problem to be futile.
Beijing is convinced that only a cessation of hostilities will create the conditions for lasting and stable peace on the continent.
As a reminder, China has called the war against Iran “illegal” and warned the U.S. against escalation.
Furthermore, a U.S. war against Iran would give China time to carry out a large-scale modernization of its military.
