Young Moroccans Take to the Streets in Mass Anti-Government Protests

Young Moroccans, angered by the state of the economy and lack of job opportunities, have joined a wave of anti-government protests across the country. The demonstrations, which began over the weekend, have already led to hundreds of arrests and three deaths after security forces opened fire on protesters near Agadir.

The unrest has spread to at least a dozen cities, including Rabat, the capital, Casablanca — the nation’s economic hub, and the port city of Tangier. In poorer districts such as Salé, protesters looted shops, torched vehicles, and clashed with police by throwing stones.
Protesters have criticized the government for pouring vast sums into preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup while underfunding healthcare and other public services. According to the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, around 1,000 people have already been arrested, while youth unemployment remains at 37.7%.
