The attack took place on Monday at San Jose National High School, which has more than 1,500 students. According to police, the suspects, aged 14 and 15, have been detained. They were students at the same school.
Regional Police Chief Jason Capoy reported that 15 of the 20 victims suffered gunshot wounds. The rest were injured while fleeing, either by jumping out of windows or falling in the crowd. According to the law enforcement official, the attackers stormed into two classrooms.
The suspects stormed into two rooms because, after the shooting in the first one, the children scattered, and the suspects apparently chased several victims into the other room, Kapoy said.
During initial questioning, the detainees stated that they had been bullied at school. Police are currently verifying this information and determining the motives behind the attack. According to the investigation, one of the suspects used a 9-mm pistol he had received from his aunt, a police officer. The other was armed with a .38-caliber revolver.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a thorough investigation into the tragedy and called for increased security measures in schools, workplaces, and public areas. Police reported that once the investigation is complete, the minors will be placed under the supervision of social services.
