Nationwide blackout occurs in Cuba — Anadolu Agency
On September 19, Cuba experienced a complete shutdown of the National Electric Power System, leaving the island without electricity. Cuba's Electric Union (UNE) said it had activated protocols to restore power supply.
Restoration of the power system
As Anadolu Agency reports, citing UNE, the operator is determining the cause of the complete shutdown and promises to provide updates on the progress of restoration work.
This is another nationwide blackout in Cuba this year. According to authorities and international media, the country experienced several nationwide outages in July, and another major failure occurred on August 2.

Prolonged electricity shortage
Before the new grid collapse, prolonged power outages had already been occurring in Havana and other parts of the country. In some areas of the capital, there had been no electricity for more than 30 hours in recent weeks.
The operation of the power system is affected by the deterioration of thermal power plants, fuel shortages, and difficulties in maintaining generation capacity. Cuba's Ministry of Energy and Mines had previously linked the outages to a combination of these factors. The outages also affect water supply and telecommunications.
The Cuban government says that U.S. measures and restrictions, which it claims affect fuel supplies, are deepening the energy crisis. In Washington, the country's economic and infrastructure problems are attributed to the policies of the Cuban authorities.
