Judo athlete Alexander Ivanov was killed in the war
Oleksandr Ivanov, a Dnipro judo athlete and soldier in the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade, was killed in the war with Russia. He died while carrying out a combat mission in the Lyman area. He had been defending Ukraine since April 2022.
Ukrainian soldier and judoka Oleksandr Ivanov was killed in the Lyman sector. He was a student of the Dnipro judo school and served in the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Mstislav the Brave. Oleksandr Ivanov was 35 years old. He dedicated about ten years of his life to judo. In the 2000s, Ivanov trained under the guidance of Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Lenkov. Over the years he spent in the sport, he participated in city and regional championships and also competed in national tournaments.
Judo had become an important part of his life long before the full-scale war began. The athlete trained, competed, and represented the Dnipro judo school at various tournaments. In April 2022, Oleksandr Ivanov stepped up to defend Ukraine. Since then, he has served in the Defense Forces and carried out combat missions on the front lines.
This time, his life was cut short in the Lyman sector. The Ukrainian Judo Federation announced the athlete’s death and expressed its condolences to his family, loved ones, and comrades. “Unfortunately, war takes the best of us… Oleksandr Ivanov will now forever be 35 years old,” the Federation’s statement reads.
The Federation also thanked the defender for his courage and service to Ukraine. “We bow our heads in respect to the Warrior for his courage and defense. Glory to the Hero,” the Ukrainian Judo Federation noted. Alexander Ivanov’s family, friends, fellow athletes, and comrades have lost a man who, before the war, dedicated himself to sports, and who, after the start of the full-scale invasion, stood up to defend his country.
The Ukrainian sports community continues to lose its members who went to the front lines after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Oleksandr Ivanov will forever remain 35 years old. His memory will be cherished by his family, loved ones, friends, students, and fellow athletes. The Ukrainian Judo Federation reported the athlete’s death.
