Germany Conducts First Test of the Lora Ballistic Missile — DW
On the night of September 2, the German Armed Forces successfully tested the Lora ballistic missile in the northern Atlantic Ocean. If Berlin decides to purchase it, the Lora will become the first ballistic missile in the Bundeswehr’s arsenal. The missile is capable of striking targets at a range of up to 430 km.
The Lora missile is manufactured by the Israeli state-owned defense company Israel Aerospace Industries. Its maximum range is up to 430 km.
At this time, Germany has not yet made a final decision on the procurement of these missiles. At the same time, a successful test could be one of the steps toward the Bundeswehr acquiring its own ballistic weapons.
Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaak, Inspector General of the German Navy, called the test launch a success. “From the perspective of the defense of Germany and our allies, this test marks a new chapter in the field of deterrence and combat capability in the naval sphere,” he said.
According to Israeli media reports, preparations for the Lora test in the Atlantic Ocean were kept secret. At the same time, approximately one and a half months before the launch, air and maritime traffic was restricted in the test area.
The test took place a few hours after German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt blamed Russia for an attempted sabotage involving an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig Airport.
On the same day, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadepuhl announced measures in response to Russian sabotage activities. Among them was the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn.
Currently, the Bundeswehr has about 600 German-Swedish Taurus cruise missiles in service, with a range exceeding 500 km. Germany is also working on an upgraded version of the Taurus, with production scheduled to begin in 2029.
