During a Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, a piece of an engine blade shattered a window next to 61-year-old Serbian citizen Ljubiša Karović, after which his head and arm were partially pulled out of the cabin. According to preliminary data from the NTSB, the broken engine blade caused damage to the fuselage and a loss of cabin pressure, and the passenger was rescued by fellow passengers.
The unfortunate incident occurred aboard a Boeing 737-800 after takeoff from the Greek city of Thessaloniki. An investigation determined that a fan blade broke off in the right engine—its fragments pierced the aircraft’s window, leading to a sudden loss of cabin pressure.
Remains of birds were found inside the engine, so the incident may have been caused by a collision with a flock of birds during takeoff. This theory is still being investigated, the agency reports.
A 61-year-old Serbian citizen was injured by the shattered window. He sustained injuries to his neck and shoulder. According to the agency, passengers pulled the victim into the cabin and used a metal box to seal the hole themselves until the emergency landing.
U.S. investigators are currently looking into the details of the engine’s maintenance history. The engine had last been inspected in May 2026, at which time no defects were found.
