Mountains of waste piled up in South Korea after Chuseok — Korea Herald

According to The Korea Herald, large amounts of waste accumulated at a cemetery and a public recycling center in South Korea after the four-day Chuseok holiday. In Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, artificial flowers left by visitors during ancestral memorial rites piled up and awaited removal.

Chuseok is one of Korea's biggest gift-giving seasons. People give gifts to relatives, friends and acquaintances, while families visit the graves of their ancestors and hold rites in their honor.

On Monday, the first working day after the four-day holiday period, a worker sorted discarded artificial flowers at a cemetery in Gyeongju.

Gift packaging

At a public recycling center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, workers sorted piles of Styrofoam containers on the same day. They had been used to package food products and gift sets containing fresh produce.
