Israeli police prevent illegal camel race in Negev — Jerusalem Post
Israeli police prevented an illegal camel race that was due to take place at a shooting range in the Negev Desert. The event was being prepared near Highway 222 in the Bedouin agricultural settlement of Bir Hadaj, The Jerusalem Post reports.
Police operation
Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene after receiving intelligence about preparations for the race. There, they found vehicles, carts, and participants arriving at the location.
Officers from the Shagiv-Shalom police station, fighters from the Yoav unit, Border Police, and the National Guard of the Israel Police Southern District took part in the operation. They were also supported by an aviation unit.

Detentions and camel seizure
Two minors who tried to flee and hide in nearby bushes were detained for further questioning at the Shagiv-Shalom station. Police also seized a camel found near them.
Camel racing is a popular sport in the Middle East and a tradition among Bedouin communities. The first legal camel race in the Negev took place in 2024 and drew thousands of spectators. The Israel Police Southern District organized the event following warnings that illegal competitions could be accompanied by shooting and animal abuse.
