UK Prime Minister Burnham did not rule out return to the EU — Deutsche Welle

French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez supported the possible return of the United Kingdom to the European Union in Madrid. Macron said such a step would be good news for both Britain and Europeans. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.

The position of France and Spain

During a meeting with Sanchez, Macron responded to the prospect of Britain returning to the EU with the words in English: “Welcome back.” He noted that if the British want to return and the prime minister moves in that direction, it would be good news.

At the same time, the French president stressed that London cannot selectively choose the benefits of relations with the European Union while remaining outside the bloc. According to him, it is not possible to choose only those EU freedoms that suit the country.

Sanchez called the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU following the 2016 referendum a great loss for both the British population and the entire European project. He added that Spain would welcome an attempt by Britain to rejoin the EU and would once again open its arms to the brotherly people.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in an interview with the BBC that the country should consider different options for developing relations with the EU. Among them, he named maintaining the current state of affairs, fully returning to the bloc, as well as possible accession to the EU single market or customs union.

At the Labour Party conference, Burnham said that Brexit had brought more harm than benefit. He said he would present different options for the future relationship between Britain and the EU closer to the parties’ summit in November. European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari noted that the EU is open to discussing London’s proposals on the further development of relations.
