British Prime Minister Andy Burnham Cancels Scheduled Events Following His Father's Death — The Guardian
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham canceled all scheduled events for Monday and Tuesday following the death of his father, Roy. In particular, Burnham was scheduled to speak at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) conference in Brighton on Tuesday.
It should be noted that his father had Alzheimer’s disease and had recently been in a nursing home. In a July interview, Burnham said that due to his health, Roy was no longer aware that his son would soon become prime minister.
“It’s sad because he would have been proud. But I look at it this way: it’s also his achievement. An achievement for our whole family, even though he doesn’t know it,” Burnham said.
The prime minister has repeatedly linked his family’s experience to the need to reform the social care system in the United Kingdom.
In one of his first speeches after taking office, he spoke about the professionalism of care workers—particularly those who cared for his father—and emphasized that their work should be better compensated.
British politicians expressed their condolences to the Burnham family.
“My thoughts are with Andy and his family during this incredibly difficult and sad time,” wrote Housing Minister Angela Rayner.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also reached out to the prime minister and his loved ones.
“No matter how old you are or how hard you try to prepare, losing a father is an incredibly painful experience. A part of your life that has always been there suddenly disappears forever, and it may feel as though a part of you will never be the same again,” she wrote.
At the start of Monday’s House of Commons session, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle also conveyed Parliament’s condolences.
“I am sure the entire House will want to extend their best wishes to him and his family during this sad time,” he said.
In his book *Head North*, co-written with Steve Rotheram, Burnham recalled a happy childhood in Calcheth, near Warrington. His father worked as a telephone engineer, and his mother, Eileen, was an administrator at a family doctor’s office.
“Our family home in Calcheth was always filled with music, life, laughter, love, and support,” Bernam wrote.
