Finland's Prime Minister Has Found Himself at the Center of a Scandal
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has faced criticism from the opposition and the media over the decision to provide state support for the Helsinki Garden project—a multifunctional sports and concert arena in Helsinki.
According to Euractiv, the government agreed to provide the project with conditional state support in the amount of 35 million euros, although internal documents from the Ministry of Finance reportedly contained warnings about the high risks associated with the project, potential cost overruns, and the presence of similar facilities nearby.
The project is led by former Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori, who, according to the publication, actively lobbied for support among high-ranking officials, including the prime minister. It is also reported that he failed to declare some of his contacts with officials in the transparency registry.
Orpo himself denies that personal or party ties influenced the decision.
Opposition parties are demanding a public explanation from the prime minister. The Social Democrats are calling on him to address Parliament, while representatives of the “Left Alliance” claim that Orpo’s responses may have contained inaccurate information and are questioning his political accountability.
An investigation by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat has drawn additional attention to the case, alleging that the government approved the project without properly verifying the financial calculations.

As a reminder, the Russian government decided to suspend traffic through a number of railway border crossing points on the borders with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia starting July 1.
The Finnish Border Guard has permanently closed the temporary border crossing points “Inari” and “Parikkala” in the Liekka region and is now removing the signs.
