French PM Lecornu to release 10 million barrels of diesel — Politico Europe

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on October 7 his intention to provide French distributors with 10 million barrels of diesel fuel from strategic reserves. According to him, the additional volumes could reduce the price of diesel by €0.12–€0.18 per litre. Politico Europe reports.

Measures amid rising fuel prices

Lecornu said that the decision was in line with the G7 countries’ agreement to release strategic fuel reserves. Rising fuel prices, which the publication links to the US-led war in Iran, have heightened French people’s concerns over the cost of living.

According to Politico Europe, France is also to release 8 million barrels of petroleum products under a broader agreement reached in March after the start of the war in Iran. Previously, the French side privately signalled the possibility of additionally allocating another 2 million barrels of diesel, but it is unclear whether they are included in the announced 10 million barrels. France’s Energy Ministry did not provide an immediate comment.

Response to student and farmer protests

During his address, Lecornu also promised to respond to the demands of high school students protesting over the neglected state of schools, a shortage of substitute teachers and class schedules. He said that young people’s anger was justified. The government plans to present its first decisions later this month after considering proposals on a special platform for students.

On Tuesday, between 256,000 people, according to police estimates, and 450,000, according to organisers, took part in demonstrations across France. Lecornu also addressed farmers and said that additional measures to the emergency bill for farmers, which provides for more than €1 billion in spending, would be announced on Thursday.
