Canadian PM Carney announces aid to Palestine — Anadolu Agency

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during the UN General Assembly in New York, announced 100 million Canadian dollars in international aid to Palestine and stated his intention to introduce trade restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Of the total amount, 80 million Canadian dollars will be directed to humanitarian aid, while another 20 million will support capacity building in peace and security. Canada also stated its leadership in training police in the West Bank.

Carney said that later that evening he would co-chair a meeting with the prime ministers of the United Kingdom and France, as well as the UN secretary-general. The participants planned to discuss a two-state settlement and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2720 on Gaza. The Canadian prime minister said that immense human suffering continues.

E1 construction plan

According to Carney, Israel’s approval of the E1 settlement construction plan east of occupied East Jerusalem poses a direct threat to peace and the prospect of creating two states. He added that Canada and its partners would, he said reluctantly, introduce trade restrictions on goods produced in settlements, which he called illegal.

Israeli authorities plan to open tenders on October 25 for the construction of 2,167 housing units under the E1 project. Together with a tender for 1,234 units announced in August, the total will amount to 3,401. According to the Palestinian presidential administration, the project is intended to connect the Maale Adumim settlement with occupied Jerusalem through the confiscation of Palestinian land. Earlier in September, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom announced measures concerning goods from Israeli settlements.
