Iranian President Pezeshkian calls on BRICS to create a permanent secretariat

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, called on the bloc’s members to counter unilateral sanctions and establish a permanent secretariat to improve the group’s effectiveness. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing the semi-official Tasnim agency.

Iran’s proposals for BRICS

According to Pezeshkian, countering unilateral sanctions, turning competition into cooperation, and establishing a permanent secretariat are necessary to improve efficiency and accelerate the implementation of BRICS decisions.

The Iranian president outlined three areas that Tehran supports within the grouping. These include strengthening political coordination based on the UN Charter and respect for national sovereignty, developing economic and financial relations independent of “monopolistic instruments,” and expanding cooperation in science, technology, energy, and food security for the benefit of Global South countries.

The Palestinian issue

Pezeshkian also raised the Palestinian issue. He called the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination “a serious test of the credibility and legitimacy of global governance.”

“Any just solution requires respect for the will of the Palestinian people,” he said. The Iranian president added that BRICS, which he called a voice of justice, should play a more active role in ending the occupation and guaranteeing Palestinians’ legitimate rights.
