Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs cut short his vacation due to the security situation after NATO fighter jets shot down a foreign drone in the country’s airspace. The head of state is expected to address the public on Saturday, August 15, for the first time since taking office.
The incident occurred on Friday morning when fighter jets from the NATO mission patrolling the airspace of the Baltic states intercepted and destroyed a drone over a forested area; no one was injured as a result. According to the Latvian military, the UAV may have entered Latvian territory due to the operation of electronic warfare systems used by the Russian air defense system.
