ICC registrar calls on EU countries to politically support the court — Anadolu Agency
In Brussels, Belgium, the registrar of the International Criminal Court, Osvaldo Zavala Giler, called on European Union countries to provide political support to the court so that it can continue its work without hindrance. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.
Meeting with EU representatives
Giler addressed representatives of EU states during a meeting of the ICC sub-group of the COJUR-ICC Working Party on Public International Law. In a video address, he stated that the resilience of justice depends both on the court itself and on its States Parties.
According to the registrar, the ICC must ensure the sustainability of its own mechanisms and procedures, but it also needs the political support of States Parties. He said that he had discussed with EU countries ways to provide such support, which is necessary to strengthen the resilience of the court's operations.

Pressure from the United States
The call came amid increased pressure by the United States on the ICC. The agency notes that Washington has already imposed sanctions on 13 court officials, including nine of the ICC's 18 judges.
US President Donald Trump again criticized the court last week during his address to the UN General Assembly and called on States Parties to leave it. US criticism intensified after the ICC issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over accusations of alleged war crimes in Gaza. The United States and Israel are not members of the ICC.
