Russia Planned to Assassinate Kasparov and Ponomarev in the U.S. — El Mundo

For several months, Russian intelligence agencies had been planning the assassinations of prominent opposition figures Garry Kasparov, Ilya Ponomarev, and Vladimir Kara-Murza. According to El Mundo, the plan was to eliminate them on the territory of the United States and European Union countries.

According to the publication, the assassination plots were directed against several Russian figures at once. Ponomarev and Kasparov were to be killed directly in the U.S.—the latter was assigned official security protection due to a real threat to his life.

The third potential victim was to be killed in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. The assailants planned to either stab her or douse her with gasoline and set her on fire.

In addition, Kasparaov’s associate Ivan Tyutrin and Bashkir activist Ruslan Gabbasov were among the targets of the Russian special services. The recruitment of hitmen began in 2025, and a reward of $25,000 was offered for carrying out the assassination.

Uncovering a Network of Hitmen in the U.S.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice reported the exposure of a sabotage group. The organization recruited people to conduct surveillance, carry out assassinations, and carry out acts of sabotage in countries that are allies of Ukraine.

The organizers of the cell turned out to be former Russian intelligence colonel Yuri Khrameev, who worked with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in his youth, and his son Kirill, a current FSB officer.

Two Cuban citizens and one Venezuelan were also involved in carrying out these missions. All suspects are currently in hiding in Russia.
