Russia threatened Slovakia over compensation for Ukraine
Russia may have exerted pressure on the government of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to prevent the country from acceding to the Convention on the Establishment of an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine.
This was stated by Ivan Novotný, a member of the Slovak opposition party “Freedom and Solidarity,” in an interview with Aktuality.sk, according to “European Truth.”
According to him, Slovakia had planned to sign the convention in July, but Fico ultimately withdrew his signature. Novotný claims that threats from Russia may have been the reason.
The politician said that on July 10, a warning was allegedly issued at the Slovak Embassy in Moscow: if the agreement were signed, Russia would regard it as a “hostile move.”
Novotný stated that he received information about the pressure from a source in the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later confirmed it through a representative of diplomatic circles.
The issue of Slovakia’s participation in the convention was also scheduled to be considered by the government on August 26. According to the opposition figure, during the meeting, Fico announced the move to the next item on the agenda without discussion.
At the same time, Novotný does not currently plan to file a legal complaint regarding possible Russian interference. He stated that the opposition will monitor the situation and, should concrete evidence of possible cooperation with a foreign state emerge, will consider filing a complaint alleging treason.
