Romania and Poland scrambled fighter jets in response to an attack by Russia

On the night of October 4, Romania and Poland scrambled their air forces in response to a Russian attack on Ukraine. In Romania, two F-18 fighter jets took off on patrol after radars detected an aerial target near the border. In Poland, residents of the Lublin Voivodeship received an air threat alert, and the Polish Air Force patrolled the country’s airspace.

On the night of October 5, the Romanian radar surveillance system detected an aerial target moving through Ukrainian territory near the border with Romania. As a result, two F-18 fighter jets from the Spanish Air Force were scrambled. They are stationed at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base and are carrying out enhanced air policing missions in Romania.

The Romanian military also alerted emergency services to a potential threat. In the northern part of Tulcea County, at 2:34 a.m. local time, residents received a RO-Alert notification.

At the same time, the Romanian military did not detect any violation of the country’s airspace. In other words, the target detected by radar remained near the border, but there was no confirmation that it had entered Romanian airspace.

The air raid alert in Tulcea lasted less than an hour. It was lifted at approximately 03:23. The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the air operation was concluded once the threat had passed.

What Happened in Poland

Poland also responded to the Russian attack on Ukraine. On the morning of October 5, Poland’s Government Security Center reported an air threat and the deployment of Polish aircraft. Residents of the Lublin Voivodeship received warnings.

The message read: “Attention! Russian air attack on Ukrainian territory. The situation is under control. Polish aircraft are operating in Polish airspace. Stay tuned for further updates.”

Thus, Polish fighter jets were patrolling the country’s airspace amid the Russian strike on Ukraine. The warning to the public was brief. Once the air threat had passed, it was lifted.

The Polish Government Security Center regularly sends such alerts to residents of regions located near the Ukrainian border when Russian attacks pose a potential air threat. Poland has already sent similar alerts during previous Russian strikes on Ukraine.

Was There a Threat to Romania and Poland?

According to official Romanian data, no violation of its airspace was recorded this time. Radars detected an aerial target near the border with Ukraine, after which fighter jets were scrambled to monitor the situation. Poland also reported no strikes on its territory. Fighter jets were scrambled due to the threat posed by the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Countries neighboring Ukraine are taking similar measures to monitor the situation in their airspace during large-scale Russian attacks. Romania and Poland have already scrambled fighter jets or issued warnings on multiple occasions due to aerial targets near the Ukrainian border. This was reported in a press release from the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

Ukraine has appealed to its neighbors to help expand the transit of agricultural products amid the blockade of Black Sea ports. However, Poland and Romania rejected this request, citing the need to protect their own agricultural interests and limited infrastructure capacity.
