Piddington village votes for ‘independence’ from Britain over asylum centre plan
Residents of the village of Piddington in central England, United Kingdom, announced that an overwhelming majority supported ‘independence’ from the United Kingdom in a symbolic vote. It was organised as a protest against plans to house more than 1,200 migrants at a facility near the village.
Results of the symbolic vote
According to The Hindu International, around 350 people live in Piddington. The results of the ‘referendum’ were announced on Wednesday, 16 September 2026.

The publication described the initiative as a tongue-in-cheek vote for secession. It was held to draw attention to the plan to house migrants at a neighbouring facility.
A village near Oxford
Piddington is located about 25 kilometres from the university city of Oxford. At the entrance to the village, there is a sign protesting against the Bicester MOD Asylum Centre.
