In Senegal, heavy rains and flash floods have caused loss of life, damage to buildings, and disruptions to transportation just a few weeks before the start of the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, which are scheduled to begin on October 31.
The natural disaster affected the capital, Dakar, and other regions of the country. Senegal’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed that several people were killed or injured in Dakar and the city of Matam; specifically, a mother and her child died when their home was flooded in the Parcelle-Assani district of the capital, and a building collapse was reported in the city of Kaolack.
Prime Minister Amadou Al-Aminou Lo warned of a high probability of further rainfall and noted that the start of the school year may be postponed if the water does not recede. According to the Senegalese Meteorological Agency (ANACIM), some areas received up to 142 mm of rainfall in a single day, placing a significant strain on the country’s infrastructure ahead of a major international competition.
