AI heightens cyber risks for Pentagon’s aging networks — Anadolu Agency
In the United States, artificial intelligence is increasing cyber risks for the Pentagon’s aging computer networks, as adversaries can more quickly identify and combine weaknesses in American defense systems. Anadolu Agency reports, citing The Washington Post.
Growing vulnerabilities
Lieutenant General Paul Stanton, whom the publication describes as the Pentagon’s top cyber defense official and the head of the Army’s cyber defense command, said the number of cyber vulnerabilities has increased tenfold amid the development of AI.
Last week at a conference in Washington, Stanton said that the U.S. Department of Defense had deferred support and maintenance of its systems, putting them at risk. According to The Washington Post, he stressed that this would no longer be allowed.

Risks to defense systems
Cybersecurity experts called the Pentagon’s vulnerability to AI-enabled cyberattacks an urgent national security concern. In their assessment, adversaries are gaining increasingly sophisticated tools to exploit weaknesses in U.S. military networks.
Experts also warned that years of deferred maintenance and outdated infrastructure could make Department of Defense systems increasingly vulnerable. At the same time, modernizing the networks could take years, while AI capabilities are developing rapidly.
Michael C. Horowitz, director of the Defense and National Security Program at the Council on Foreign Relations, said adversaries could gain more opportunities to disrupt American information networks, access U.S. military data, and compromise national security.
