Sri Lanka Calls for Gaza Recovery and Reconstruction — Anadolu Agency

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, called for Gaza’s earliest possible recovery and reconstruction to be made one of the priorities. He also reaffirmed Colombo’s support for the inalienable rights of Palestinians and a two-state solution, Anadolu Agency reports.

Support for Palestinian Statehood

Herath said that Sri Lanka supports the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. According to him, the country advocates the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state that would exist alongside Israel in peace within the borders that existed before 1967.

The Sri Lankan foreign minister also welcomed the UN Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza and called on all parties to comply with it. He expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, stressing that dialogue is the only viable way forward.

Climate Justice

Separately, Herath drew attention to climate change-related natural disasters, particularly in South Asia. He said that less developed countries, whose share of global emissions is the smallest, are paying the price for the intensification of this phenomenon.

As an example, the minister mentioned recent flash floods and landslides in Nepal and China, which killed more than 1,400 people, while thousands are still considered missing. He stressed that climate justice must become an urgent reality.
