Sweden expelled an Iranian diplomat from the country

On September 16, 2026, Sweden summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and expelled one Iranian diplomat. According to the Swedish government, the diplomat was ordered to leave the country due to activities that violate the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and pose a threat to national security.

The Swedish Security Service and the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs noted that Iran has long been engaged in activities targeting individuals who oppose the Iranian regime, as well as Jewish and Israeli interests in the country. Justice Minister Gunnar Strømmer clarified that the Iranian side had, in particular, used criminal networks for this purpose.

A group of U.S. senators from both parties has introduced a bill that would expand the mechanism for using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
