Starmer to Announce His Resignation on Monday — The Guardian
On the morning of Monday, June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will officially announce his resignation as head of government and release a clear timeline for the upcoming reshuffle of the current cabinet.
Ministers in the current cabinet have confirmed that Starmer will make the relevant announcements outside his residence at 10 Downing Street, thereby initiating the process of appointing the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in the last decade.
As recently as last Friday, most members of Starmer’s political team insisted on the need to continue the fight against his rival, Andy Burnham.
However, after about ten ministers privately informed the prime minister that his time was up, and taking into account a number of other circumstances, he decided to step down.
Although other options remained on the table, Starmer and his inner circle began working on drafts of his resignation speech as early as Saturday.
The most likely timeline for the handover of power would see him remain in office until the fall, to allow the new leader to rally the Labour Party at its annual conference in late September and to formulate their own government program and team to implement it.
The transition of power must proceed as smoothly as possible to maintain political stability in the country.
One current government official commented to the publication on the current situation in the upper echelons of power: “Logically, the best option for both Andy and Keir would be for this to happen in September. Andy doesn’t have a team ready to move into Downing Street, and he needs time to prepare. On the other hand, this would also allow Keir to prepare for his departure.”
A deep political crisis erupted in the United Kingdom following the May local elections.
According to the results, the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Assembly for the first time and secured 1,400 fewer seats across the country’s various legislative bodies than before.
This was reported by the authoritative British publication *The Guardian*.
