The Sun: US may have flown diplomat out of Britain after search

US authorities may have flown a US diplomat from the United Kingdom to the United States after a search, Anadolu Agency reports, citing the British newspaper The Sun. According to the publication, the diplomat, who allegedly worked at the US Embassy in London, is involved in an investigation into suspected offenses related to indecent images of children.

The Sun claims that on August 25, the diplomat was taken from his home in southwest London during a search. The newspaper reported that US authorities seized materials, and that the man was later allegedly taken to a military facility and flown to the United States on a cargo plane. According to its information, the United States did not submit a formal request for the diplomat's extradition from the United Kingdom.

London police position

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed that on August 25, US authorities informed it about an investigation into suspected offenses in London related to indecent images of children. Police said they continue to remain in contact with the US side in this case.

As Anadolu Agency notes, US personnel generally do not have police powers to arrest people in the United Kingdom. The formal transfer of a person for criminal proceedings would normally have to take place under British legal procedures, including through extradition, if applicable.

Flight data

According to The Sun's version, the investigation in the United States may be connected to another person whom the newspaper calls the diplomat's brother. This person is allegedly accused of sending violent materials to the diplomat. The publication also reported that a US court may have issued a relevant warrant before the search.

The newspaper cited flight data according to which a Kalitta Air Boeing 747 cargo aircraft arrived from Chicago at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on August 24 and departed from there for Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on August 25. The Sun also claims that British authorities were informed about the operation only after the diplomat had been flown out. Police and US authorities have not publicly named the diplomat or confirmed specific claims about him; the investigation is ongoing.
