Trump may appoint intelligence director Clayton as AI czar — Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump may appoint Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to the position of so-called AI czar — an official who would oversee the development of the US artificial intelligence industry. Al Jazeera reports, citing CNN, CBS and Axios. According to these media outlets, the announcement could come as early as Friday.
White House position
A White House representative told Al Jazeera that the president would personally announce any personnel decisions. He added that all reports before an official announcement were unfounded speculation.
Last month, Trump wrote on social media that he would appoint a new AI czar amid increasingly active calls for government intervention in the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies. The role was previously held by venture investor David Sacks, who left the post this year and became an external adviser to the president.

Combining positions
Clayton previously served as prosecutor for the Southern District of New York and chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In July, the US Senate confirmed him as director of national intelligence, responsible for US intelligence services. He replaced Bill Pulte, whom Trump had previously appointed acting director of the US intelligence community.
It is currently unknown whether Clayton would combine the possible role of AI czar with his duties as director of national intelligence. On Tuesday, he participated in an AI meeting at the White House together with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering next month, warned in its prospectus that the Trump administration's attitude toward the company could affect its relationships with customers and government partners.
