Student housing building collapses in Delhi, killing at least six — Daily Maverick
A building housing students collapsed in India’s capital, Delhi. At least six people were killed and several others were injured. Rescuers continued searching the rubble for people who may have remained trapped.
Building near educational institutions
As Daily Maverick reports, citing Reuters, the building was located in southern Delhi, near colleges and universities. It had a basement and five above-ground floors and was used as student housing.
Footage from the site of the collapse, which occurred on Sunday, showed piles of bricks and broken concrete columns. Police, rescuers and local residents took part in the search for those who may have been under the debris.

Authorities’ version and condition of those rescued
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said there was water in the building’s basement. According to her, the old building collapsed because of water accumulation and repair work that was underway in the structure.
Six people were taken to the nearest hospital after being rescued, and their condition is stable, Gupta said. According to television channels, police were searching for the building’s owner.
